THE LOBB'S OF ST. TEATH PARISH,CORNWALL
By KENNETH MORSE

Three Lobb brothers came to America from Cornwall in the 1880's : Richard,Robert and Claude.
First of all,let us go back and see what we know of their ancestors.
The Lobb family is now quite numerous in Cornwall and indeed there is a Lobb Book Shop in London.
There was a Richard Lobb of Warleggan, born about 1535, buried 9/3/1586. He married Thomasyne Grosse and had a son Richard who was baptized 3/22/1607 and married Hannah Penn. This last Richard was high sheriff of Cornwall, and a member of Parliament for a brief time. He was moreover a merchant (dealt in poultry, etc.),died at Mylor and was buried 5/8/1678.
(For convenience, months are numbered, regarding January as the first month, although it did not actually become so in England or the United States until 1752.)
This high sheriff had four sons Nicholas,John,Stephen and Peter. The motto of the Lobb family is “Amor gignit amorem” (Love begets love).

Now whether our family was descended from the high sheriff we do not know. At least, it is very possible.
Whatever I have of the three brothers who came to America I heard from my grandfather Richard George Lobb, one of these three brothers.
It will be noted that the middle name of my grandfather was George. His father Robert Lobb was the son of Edward George and Elizabeth or Betsy Lobb daughter of Robin Lobb. This EdwardGeorge was the son of Hamley George. He had a brother Joseph who married Philippa _____ and they had four children Mary Ann,Pricilla,Jane and Hamley (born about 1842). This last Hamley married Grace Davis and had a daughter Anna.

Going back to Edward son of Hamley and brother of Joseph, he twice married. By his first wife he had a son Hamley George, and by his second wife Betsy Lobb daughter of Robin,he had four sons, Robert George Lobb, and Edward,Richard, and John George, and none of these three had children.
As could be sumised, Robert carried the surname Lobb because he was born before his parents were married. He was born on 10/21 or 22/1813,and married Mary Paul daughter of John and Mary Paul of Tregoodwill. Previously, Mary Paul had a son William Cann by her first husband (named Cann). Later she bore a son Frederick Browning Paul (his father was one Browning). Cann went to the Indian wars and was reported dead. Mary now married Robert George Lobb. Next, it was learned that Cann had returned from India and was dying in a hospital. Mary visited him there, but on his death remarried Robert Lobb.
Their first child was Samuel, born about 1836. He was a policeman, and about six feet tall. He lost an eye hunting. He was twice married and died about 1900. His children were Anna,Claudia and Mary.
Their second child was Richard George Lobb born 6/16/1838, of whom more later.
Their third child was Edward Lobb, born 1840. He married _____ Jewell, and had two children, Frederick (who died unmarried) and Alithea Euginia.
Their fourth child was Mary Jane, born about 1843, who married Henry Penfound. Their children were Mary (born c.1861), Frederick (born c.1864),and twins John and Claude (born c.1866).
Their fifth child was Robert Lobb, born 12/18/1845, see below.
Their sixth child was Claude, born 7/2/1848, see below.

Richard George Lobb, the oldest of the three brothers, had little schooling. He took care of the family while his parents worked. At the age of 11 he was put out to “sarvice”,and remained so for two years. Then for a short time he attended the school of an old man, but he died and that ended his schooling, yet later in life, he was able to read, altho a bit laboriously.
When about 17 he ran away to Padstow and two weeks later took ship on the “Fadeaway” ,under Captain John Dark.
Life on board ship did not suit Richard too well ,and when they got to Lisbon, he tried to run away. He hid in a sail, and after dark, took a small boat and went ashore. Next day at change of watch, he eluded the police but finally fell in with some man who reported him to the police, who put him in jail, from which he was recovered by Captain Dark.

From Lisbon they sailed to the Canary Islands, and thence to Brazil, and thence they returned to Liverpool.
Richard (or Dick) learned some things aboard ship, and used to talk about the stars, notably Aldebaran.
Arriving in Liverpool, Dick ran away again, this time successfully, walking all the way home to Cornwall, which was possibly 250 miles. On his way he crossed the river at Liverpool to Birkenhead, thence he passed thru Whitechurch and Chester (which had walls), Shrewsbury,Montgomery, Abergavenny, and Newport.
Needing money he signed up on the vessel “Rebecca Lang”. From headquarters at Plymouth he visited Swansea, the Isle of Wight and Southampton. Then after about two years, he returned home and soon married his first cousin Grace Paul, daughter of George Paul and his wife Grace Cook. She was born 7/13/1838, and they were married on 7/13/1859.
He often said the 13th was a lucky day for him. It is said one reason he went to sea was because his parents and Grace's parents objected to the marriage because they were first cousins. He worked for a year at Tregoodwill as a mason under his half brother William Cann. His wife's brother Richard Paul now returned from California. He (Richard Paul) and his brother Henry (Harry) persuaded grandfather to go into partnership with them at Tintagel.
Harry Paul's son Martin was born in Cleveland,on 3/28/1869. Other relatives were in Cleveland by 1880, so when grandfather Richard Lobb came in 1880, others had broken the way.
His youngest daughter Grace (named for her mother) was born in Cleveland on 3/20/1881. All other children were born in Cornwall. But Richard's wife, Grace died 1/7/1882 and was buried in the “potter's field”,later removed to a proper grave.
With 8 children , grandfather felt the need to have a mother for the children, and corresponded with a widow in Ripon Wisconsin, Martha Pinch by name, whom he married on 12/12/1882. She died 2/23/1914 and he on 5/25/1924 at Cleveland.
The Children of Richard George Lobb and his wife Grace Paul were,
Mary Jane - born at Tregoodwill, died young
Richard George - born at Longbridge,Tintagel,Cornwall 4/6/1862
Mary - born at Longbridge 8/23/1864
Robert - born at Longbridge 3/3/1867
Paul - born at Longbridge 3/11/1871
Henry - born at Longbridge 8/17/1875
Emma Jane - born at Longbridge 5/19/1878
Grace - born at Cleveland,Ohio U.S.A. 3/20/1881

As I put down some of my personal recollections, I may say that I understand that grandfather Richard Lobb used to attend East Madison Avenue Congregational Church (the building was located on the N.E. corner of Quincy and East 79th Street in Cleveland). Because he was quite deaf, he had to sit up front. He didn't smoke or use intoxicants. I was told he smoked at one time, but gave it up to be a good example to his boys.
His wife's brother Henry (or Harry) Paul was a cripple, walked on crutches, probably because when he was a boy he fell while trying to get a birds nest from a bridge. But I should say that he (my uncle Harry) became a devout christian. He was of scholarly nature, wrote an autobiography. I was told that some of the Paul family belonged to the Bible Christians, and used to preach on street corners, standing in a wagon to do so. The Bible Christians were apparently strong in Cornwall. Billy Bray was a famous preacher of that denomination.

Grandfather spoke a distinct Cornish dialect. Not all people in Cornwall spoke alike, in fact, the dialects would shade off from one county to the next, and grandfather said that in Cornwall there were two parts, one called”we's” country, where folks always said “we” and never said “us”,and “us” country where the reverse was true. Thus the latter would say “Wim (we am) goin”. Grandfather belonged to “we's” country. He also used “hair for both “she” and “her”. Thus instead of “She told us so” he would say “Hair told we so”. He also used “they” for “those” and objects and animals would be “he” or “ee” regardless of gender. To me the possesive sounded like “eess”.
His h's were misplaced. For “Here's the hook and here's the eye”, I once heard him say, “Eer's the ook an eer's the hi”.
Actually the pronoun “she” did not occur in old English ,and in Cornish “Did a come ?” could mean “Did he (or she) come ?”
Grandfather's son Dick told me that “thee” was still sometimes used ,particularly in a sort of dispariging sense. Thus “Where art thee going” or”Beesta coming?” Also grandfather used the old accusative of “he”, viz. en or un ,as in “He took the orse and tacked en” (He took the horse and hitched him.”) The plural of the present tense of “to be” was in grandfathers speech, wim and yoom and them (ie: we am, you am, they am). It should be noted that “ea” had the Irishsound, thus Go to the stoor and git a paound of tay. And,” I must go aout an mate me ckickens” (meat i.e. feed my chickens). I also recall “chimley” (chimney) and “the ould ooman” (the old woman, i.e. my wife). St Teath was pronounced “Sinteth”. Other places grandfather mentioned were,Padstow (Padsta) . Wadebridge (Wedbridge), St. Endellion, trebarwith, Delabole, Longa Bridge (as grandfather pronounced it) and Camelford.

Cornwall is a rocky place and many of our relatives worked in the stone quarries (at Delabole,as I recall).
Cornwall has a mild climate and flowers grow profusely. In the old days it is said that some used to smuggle goods to and from France, and sometimes would light false fires on the coast to lure ships onto the rocks for plunder.
Cornwall had a language of it's own, akin to Welsh. The last person to speak it is said to have been Dolly Pentreath, who died in 1777.

I have before me a map drawn by my Uncle Dick, according to which the points occur as follows from southwest to northeast: Treknow, Castle Island (King Arthur's Castle famed in the tales of the Knights of the Roundtable) , Trevena (Tintagel) ,Bossiney (pronounced Bazinny),and then the road curves to the right, descending to a stream. Right across the stream is the old home, built of stone,on the right side of the road, and this is the Long Bridge . The road then turns left and ascends to Trethevy and thence to Boscastle. Approximate distances from the Castle to Trevena, 1 mile, to Bosinney ½ mile, to stream at Longbridge ¼ mile.
Upstream from Longbridge perhaps a mile is a waterfall, called St. Knighton's Kieve, described as very beautiful.
Uncle Dick wrote: “Not far from the Cornish home of our forbearers lay a rough stretch of land we called the moors. About 5 or 6 miles from Camelford it began - - thousands of acres of wild, waterless desert, it's covering a layer of broken granite, ranging from huge blocks that looked like buildings down to a fine sand that was blown by the wind. Dartmoor occupied by the most important military prison in England, is part of it. Roughtor, nearer at home and Brown Willy, right on the line between Cornwall and Devonshire, are almost mountains. Roughtor (pronounced Rowter, ow as in cow)was a favorite climb by the young people of nearby towns.

Along the stream at Longbridge there were two mills, one upstream on the right side going downstream, and the other considerably down stream and on the left side. Near the ocean on the right side of the stream a flattopped rockcalled Crook's Tor or Crocky Star projected into the water “from which we could fish in fine weather. I took a hammer and chissel there and cut my initials when I was about 15”.
Between the road and the ocean between Trevena and Bosinney was a stretch oflevel treeless land perhaps 300 feet or more above sea level. Away from the ocean, roads led from Trevena and likewise Bosinney to Camelford. There were perhaps six or seven houses at Trevena and likewise at Bosinney .
The old home at Longbridge seems to have stood by itself . There were maybe three houses at Trethey.
Grandfather used to recite a rime about “Trevena,Trebarwith,Tregatta,Treknow,Tretutton,Trecayrn…… below, eight lucky towns all in a row”. I never wrotr it down and have it imperfectly.
A newspaper clipping has turned up that states that Henry Paul and wife came to Cleveland in 1867, being the first of the Paul family to come.

The remainder of Kenneth's booklet contains the names and dates for the descendants of the Lobb's of St Teath Parish,Cornwall ,and they are included in the Riley Family Tree 2002 in their appropriate places. 2
